O'Hare Noise Reports

The Chicago Department of Aviation provides monthly reports to O’Hare Noise Compability Commission members based on the Airport Noise Management System (ANMS).  The ANMS is a comprehensive system designed to provide actual measurement of the aircraft noise levels in Chicago neighborhoods and suburban communities near O’Hare Airport.

The ANMS integrated system includes many components including a network of 33 permanent noise monitors that measure the noise environment. The system directly connects to the FAA’s air traffic control radar that collects aircraft flight tracks.  More than 5 million data points are recorded and stored by the system each day.

At the direction of the ONCC, the ANMS and report compilation methodology were independently verified by an aircraft noise expert

Installed in 1996, the Airport Noise Management System (ANMS) records noise events that are summarized by month in four categories:  Runway Use, Aircraft Noise, Aircraft Fleet Mix, and Noise Complaints.

The Chicago Department of Aviation and ONCC use ANMS data to facilitate development and management of noise abatement programs at O’Hare.

Runway Use Report

The report presents the average percentage of use for each runway for the current month, the previous month and a 12-month average.

Aircraft Noise Report
The report summarizes noise measurements from each of 33 permanent noise monitors located around O’Hare Airport in Day-Night Average Sound Levels (DNLs).  DNL is a 24-hour time-averaged sound exposure level with a 10-decibel (dB) nighttime (10 p.m. to 7 a.m.) weighting to account for lower background noise levels during nighttime hours

Aircraft Fleet Mix Report
The report summarizes the number and type of aircraft that operate at O’Hare International Airport during both all hours of the day and during nighttime hours.

Noise Complaint Report
Citizens are invited to express their concern about particular aircraft events or aircraft noise levels in general on the Chicago Department of Aviation’s toll-free noise hotline, 1-800-435-9569, and via internet at www.flychicago.com.

Long Term Portable Monitors

Long Term Portable Monitor Noise Reports include monthly noise levels and a four-color map showing projected noise changes based on the O’Hare Modernization Program Full Build Out Noise Contour of 65 DNL.

At the request of the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission, the Chicago Department Aviation introduced long term portable noise monitors in October 2008 in three communities—Itasca, Niles and Schiller Park.  Monitoring discontinued in Niles and Schiller Park in  November 2009.  The third long term portable monitor remains in Itasca.
